Definition of Republic: a nation or state whose governmental organization is based on the principle that the citizen, normally through an electorate, forms the very root of sovereignty, recognizing the principle of the rule-of-law rather than rule of man. The principle of the rule of law maintains the form of government, provides for peaceful transition of government authority after honest election by secret ballot, and protects minorities from the majority.
The Republic of America is unique in that the central federal government Constitution grants no specific voting rights to the citizens it represents. The citizens of the USA are each, first, citizens of one and only one state of the United States, and each of these individual states, with some legal variation between them, through its own Constitution or law, grants its citizens the right to vote for representative political candidates, issues and federal "electors" in local, state and federal elections.
This definition describes Republic as applied to the United States of America. In actual practice today, almost all states who are not a monarchy call themselves Republic, including even Communist and Socialist states, which are about as far from being a true Republic as they can be. Many states in which the people do not vote, or vote only in elections with only one candidate or one issue position, still call themselves "Democratic" Republics. The term Democratic Republic is synonymous with the term Social Democracy, which describes a national decline into a Socialist dictatorship. Actual forms of government vary wildly among those who call themselves Republics.

Atheist Genesis:
In the beginning there was nothing, and nothing happened to nothing.
And then nothing accidentally exploded and created everything.
And then some bits of everything accidentally encountered other bits of everything and formed some new kinds of everything.
And then some bits of everything accidentally arranged themselves into self-replicating bits of everything.
And then some self-replicating bits of everything accidentally arranged themselves into dinosaurs.
