Two steps forward, one step back. We wrote about the neck surgery back in the New Computer Woes page. Close on the heals of that surgery came a resurgence of the old Vertigo problem I had years ago, and spoke of in the Contraception Perversion page. And that turned out to be worse than the surgery.
We don't think the surgery caused the vertigo, but triggered it. It was always just laying there waiting for an excuse to get fired up again.
Marcie says I was awake and talking to her in some post-op place, and in the hallway as they took me to another room, and in that room, but I don't remember one single thing about any of that. She said that I was complaining about everything spinning around. That was all on surgery-day Thursday, I think. I remember Friday, and I couldn't go home yet. Saturday we went home, and I had no vertigo.
I didn't remember saying everything was spinning around, and Marcie didn't know I didn't remember it, so, as far as I knew, vertigo was the last thing I had to worry about. It wasn't even in the picture. The following Thursday night, in the middle of the night I just rolled over in bed and vertigo hit me like a tidal wave. The bed, the room, the house and the world just would not stop spinning wildly out of control. It put me in a state of perpetual unstoppable motion (which was unreal; it was all in my head).
Once the wildest aspects of it settled down, I had to move and do things slowly for fear of bringing it on again. Sitting up, I felt it, and had to be still for awhile. Standing up, I felt it, and again, had to just stand still a minute. Turning, bending, looking up, simple things like that done too quickly, could start to bring it on, and being still would allow it to subside. Every single time I laid down, there it was again, at least for a moment or two.
Anyway, it all settled down enough that I felt comfortable driving, because it seemed that my most vertigo-proof body position was seated upright. So I could keep my medical appointments and go to my therapy on my own. It gradually got to the point where it was mostly a balance problem rather than full-on vertigo. In the house and for short distances, I was fine; but I don't know if I could have walked a straight line for very far without wandering off the line.
A friend gave me a cane and insisted that I take it and use it; she had several more and didn't need it. To my surprise it helped a great deal. It was a sort of stabilizing aid to uprightness and balance. I started waking around the block.
I completed the full course of physical therapy for my right arm - the reason for the spinal surgery in the first place. Got a lot more articulation control and range of motion, and strength, but that's not saying much. My right arm is still quite weak, and I am right handed.
Believe it or not, once upon a time I was quite strong. I sold my old weight set on this website, on the Vic Has Iron Weights For Sale page. Before Mark came to live with us and the weight room became his bedroom I used to work out with them on a regular basis. So, now I am "weightless". And it's embarrassing that I had to get some new super-light dumbbells to keep my right arm development coming along after finishing physical therapy.
My surgeon recommended a special vertigo therapy program offered by Kettering, and VA approved it. Thank you President Trump.
I didn't even know there was such a thing. I'm in it now, and it is helping a lot; all the things I have been afraid to do are things I should be doing; laying down fast, sitting up fast being the most surprising. Doing these movements several times, back-to-back, with 30 second pauses in between, had the spinning sensation go from, yeah, there it is again, to, hey, I don't feel it now, in pretty short order.
So I was making good progress and gaining confidence. Then, Thursday evening and Friday I started getting an upper respiratory problem with a lot of coughing. Pretty sick most of the weekend, and got to the point where I couldn't sleep laying down; I had to be sitting up. So, Monday night I went downstairs and went to sleep sitting up.
Some time in the middle of the night I got up to go to the bathroom and just fell flat on my face. My legs just buckled under me. I knocked over two small tables and the support for my new dumbbells, and they came crashing down on me. Luckily, they just hit me in the head, so no real damage was done. But then I had a real problem getting back up, because I then had a super-cramp in my right leg. Poor Vic.
It took awhile, but I got up, got everything put back in place and back to normal, except that, now the verigo was back, although milder. It was there. I felt like a lot of progress had been undone. Anyway, when my phone alarm went off I brought Marcie her coffee and got her up.
We agreed I should cancel the Tuesday therapy because I still had the coughing problem not under control yet. Now that is subsiding somewhat, and so is the vertigo. This morning I did a tray full of bacon in the oven, and when I went from a bent-over-at-the-oven-door position to turned-around-upright position to put it on the counter, there it was again. I thought I was past that point. Poor Vic.
Here it is Wednesday, and again, I woke up without any words. What I mean by that is I usually wake up between 2:30 and 3:00 AM with some modicum of an idea around which I can write a webpage in this website. I put the coffee on and start writing. But this time I had nothing.
So, I started writing this self-sypathyzing pitiful story mostly out of a lack of anything else to write. At 5:00 AM I brought Marcie her coffee wakeup, and after breakfast and she left for work, here I am, pitiful as can be, boring you to death with all this unimportant self-pitying crap while the world is burning down and going to hell all around us. Maybe the words will come back tomorrow.
Can I hear a "Poor Vic"?

Vic, maybe God is saying stop worrying about the world so much and take care of yourself. I've stopped reading all the papers and cut back on the internet and TV for Lent and I'm a lot calmer. I figure the Lord can take care of things better than I can.
Years ago my mother suffered with vertigo and it scared the heck out of her. It stopped and never came back, so I hope that will be your experience also.
You've got a vast amount of insight on these pages and I think everyone has times when the mind needs a rest.
